150 job losses in Shannon just before Christmas comes as devastating news – Breen

1,700 lose their jobs in Clare in six months since Cowen became Taoiseach

Fine Gael Clare TD, Pat Breen, has described the announcement of 150 job losses at Element Six in Shannon as devastating for the workers and all in the region.

“The announcement by Element Six that it is to cut 150 jobs will come as devastating news to the workers in Shannon and their families.

“There is never a good time to hear about job losses but today’s announcement is especially harsh with just three weeks to Christmas. Element Six are looking for voluntary redundancies but have said that if the necessary reductions in numbers are not found, lay-offs will follow. With no alternative employment in place in the region, it is unlikely that workers will willingly leave Element Six.

“In fact, since Brian Cowen took over, the job situation in Clare has gone from bad to worse with 1,539 job losses in Clare since he became Taoiseach. Today’s announcement brings that unenviable figure up to 1,700.

“The Fianna Fáil Government’s botched policies are causing an employment meltdown. The number of people in work is falling for the first time in 17 years and unemployment has risen by almost 30% in three months. Element Six is one of Shannon‘s oldest industries and the fact that it is jettisoning one-quarter of its workforce is a prime example of the unravelling of the Irish economy. Alongside this, managers in Element Six previously warned that the cutting of the Shannon-Heathrow route would badly impact on the firm.

“Brian Cowen and Fianna Fáil have completely flunked the challenge of reinventing our economy and it is ordinary workers, like those in Element Six, that are now paying the price.”
