Breen accuses the Government of effectively abandoning a once thriving Mid West Region.

October 29th, 2010 - Pat Breen

Speaking following the announcement of the loss of 107 jobs at Shannon Aerospace, and 100 jobs losses at Elsevier in the Shannon Free Zone, Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has warned that the Enterprise Minister Batt O’Keeffe must seek funding from the EU Globalisation fund to assist these workers. Deputy Breen has accused the Government of “effectively abandoning a once thriving Mid West Region”, warning that we will continue to be plagued with the haemorrhaging of jobs if the Regions declining competitiveness is not addressed

“The loss of 107 jobs at Shannon Aerospace was a tragedy in its own right, but the loss of another 100 jobs at Elsevier made last Thursday one of the blackest Thursday’s for job losses in this County for a long time. My thoughts are with the staff and their families in both Companies as they try to come to terms with this devastating news.”

“In relation to Shannon Aerospace and having attended a Meeting with the Company on Friday last, I understand that discussions will now be taking place between the Management and the Workers at the Shannon facility over the next number of weeks in order to try and agree a package of cost saving measures including redundancies as part of this restructuring plan. Shannon Aerospace is one of the Region’s flagship companies and I will them well in their discussions.”
