€46,800 allocated to repair section of the Fergus Embankments

November 11th, 2010 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has welcomed the news that the OPW have allocated €46,800 to Clare County Council to repair part of the Fergus Embankments.

The work will be carried out at Inisdea in Ballynacally to repair damaged sections of the embankment around 130 metres in total

“Over the years I have raised this issue on a number of occasions and on the 13th October 2010 last, I raised this matter again and on this occasion, I was hopeful that funding would be provided. The Minister for State at the Department of Finance with responsibility for the OPW Dr Martin Mansergh indicated that if an application was submitted to Clare County Council to repair the embankments that it was open to the Council to apply for funding under the Minor Flood Works Scheme and he would look favourably on same.”

“I immediately contacted Tom Coughlan, County Manager, Clare County Council and arranged for him to send out an Engineer to inspect the extent of the damage. I understand that when the Engineer completed his report that the Council applied for funding for the project over a week ago.”

“I am delighted now that the Council’s application for funding has been accepted and I hope that the repair works can get underway immediately.”

“Going forward, now that the Council have undertaken an indepth analysis of the problems along the Fergus Embankments, I would hope that further emergency funding could be provided down the road to further strengthen these embankments.”
