October 4th, 2012 - Pat Breen

Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen has written to the Taoiseach to ask him to issue an invitation to Chicago’s First Citizen Mayor Rahn Emanuel to lead a Trade Mission to the Mid-West Region and travel on the inaugural United Airlines Chicago to Shannon Service next June.

Deputy Breen’s action follows the news that United Airlines are to commence a Shannon-Chicago Direct five-weekly service commencing on the 7th June 2013 and continuing until the 27th August 2013.
Firstly, can I said that I am delighted that United Airlines have responded to the Gathering 2013 by providing this additional services in to Shannon Airport. When the Taoiseach and I met with the Airlines Senior Vice President of United Airlines Hershel Kamen last March he did indicate that the Airline would respond to the initiative when he was drawing up this schedule for 2013.

The Gathering 2013“ has the potential to attract an additional 120,000 US visitors to Ireland during the year-long festivities next year and the provision of this direct air link will ensure that this Region benefits from the event. As well as facilitating tourists it will allow Clare people and those who have connections with this County to travel home direct from Chicago.

United Airlines will operate on B757’200’s from its Chicago Hub from where it provides connections to over 125 destinations right access North, Central and South American and the Caribbean.

US Foreign Direct Investment is critical for this Country as we works towards recovery and last year US investment surged to all time high. In 2011, US FDI was valued at €188 million and increase of over $30 billion on the previous year. Investments such at Abbott, Eli-Lilly, Mastercard, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and PayPay point to the very positive image that Ireland now has in the United States as a location for FDI.
“It is important that this Region benefits from the increased interest in Foreign Direct Investments. There are quite a number of multinationals based in the Chicago area and I believe the provision of this new service provides an opportunity for us to promote this Region as a location for investment. I have written to the Taoiseach to ask him to issue an invitation to the Mayor of Chicago Rahn Emanuel to lead a Trade mission here from Chicago and travel on United Airlines First direct service into Shannon Airport and I hope that the Mayor Emanuel will be in a position to take up the invitation.”
