Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs Pat Breen T.D. has today (Wednesday) welcomed the announcement by the Social Protection Minister Joan Burton TD that An Post is the preferred bidder to her Departments Cash Services Contract.
“I had lobbied long and hard for An Post to retain this contract and I am delighted that this is now being made possible.
This is very good news for An Post and its employees, but it is particularly good news for our Communities. The Local Post Office is an integral part of our communities and the social welfare contract comprises 40% of the financial services which are administered by those Post Offices.
Social welfare recipients will now continue to receive their payments at their local Post offices and I am pleased that this will be the case, especially given the concerns of our elderly people who were very anxious to be able to continue to pick up their pensions at their Post office.
I am very conscious of the important role that the post office plays in our communities and very much welcome the expansion of services which An Post now provide. In effect, they have become a one stop shop where people can pay bills and carry out a range of banking and other financial services. I would hope to see their services expanded even further going forward and I will be continuing to work with the local post offices and their representatives in this regard.
