Breen urges Aer Lingus to engage with Shannon Cabin Crew.

October 8th, 2013 - Pat Breen

Clare T.D and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen today (Tuesday) called on Aer Lingus to re-engage with their Shannon based Cabin Crew in order to bring an end to uncertainty regarding crewing of their B757’s ahead of the restoration of the Airline’s all year round transatlantic services from Shannon Airport to Boston and New York.

Deputy Breen’s comments follow reports that Aer Lingus has not reached agreement with its Shannon based Staff to crew the 2 B757’s which the Airline has leased and is planning to operate on their Boston and New York Services into Shannon Airport and that as a result of this the Airline is planning to outsource the work and lay off some of its cabin crew.

“The restoration of Aer Lingus all year round services to Boston and New York from Shannon Airport is a tremendous boost for transatlantic capacity into Shannon Airport and a major boost for the tourism and industrial sectors all along the West Coast of Ireland. It is important therefore that ahead of their restoration that there is certainty in the market place.

In that regard, the current impasse between the Airline and its Cabin Crew is unhelpful. Aer Lingus has a dedicated and loyal staff at Shannon Airport and their experience I believe would prove invaluable for the Airline in crewing the two B757’s which the Airline plans to use on its Boston and New York Shannon Services.

All efforts must be made to reach an agreement on crewing the B757’s and all Industrial Relations Mechanisms exhausted before any decision is made to outsource this work which in the longer run may cause even further difficulties at the Airline.

At the end of the day, the only way that a dispute can be resolved is if both parties sit down around the table and I would urge Aer Lingus to reengage with their Shannon based staff and to try and find a resolution to the current impasse which in my view is in the best interests of Shannon Airport, the Airline and its staff.
