Foreign Affairs Committee to hear from Tánaiste on policy review

December 3rd, 2013 - Pat Breen

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade tomorrow meets with Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore TD to consider the recently launched Foreign Affairs Policy Review by his Department.
The Review sets out to ensure Ireland gains maximum benefit from the resources it commits to international engagement in a rapidly-changing world.

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “The Foreign Affairs Policy Review, launched by the Tánaiste in October, is a significant initiative to optimise Ireland’s foreign policy for an ever more globalised and interconnected world. With a changing international environment, it is important to take stock and ensure that the Government is equipped with the right mix of policies and instruments and to protect and promote Ireland’s interests and values in the years ahead.”

Separately, the meeting will consider the upcoming December Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting with the Tánaiste, scheduled for 16 December in Brussels.

Deputy Breen continues: “The Tánaiste’s presence tomorrow will provide the Committee with an opportunity to review FAC meetings in recent months and assess the approach he proposes to take at the upcoming December meeting. Recent meetings have focussed on progress on the EU’s engagement with its neighbours to its east and south, and relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Myanmar/Burma and China. While the agenda for the December meeting is yet to be finalised, it is likely that the FAC will visit some of these issues and will also consider the Middle East Peace Process and Russia. The December FAC will also discuss the last-minute decision of President Yanukovich at last week’s Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius to sign the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and the turmoil to which this has led in the Ukraine.

The meeting takes place at 2:30 pm tomorrow Wednesday 4 December in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here: http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/watchlisten/
