Integrated Public Transport Services key to sustainability of West Clare as a Tourist Destination - BREEN
Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen lending his support to the calls from the West Clare Family Resource Centre for a coordinated Bus and Rail Timetable serving the People of West Clare said that the “integration of our Public Transport facilities are key to the sustainability of West Clare as a Tourist Destination”.
“This is an issue which I have been pursing for some time. Last August, I was in touch with Bus Eireann when I sought an adjustment to the early morning Route 336 from Kilkee to facilitate people who wished to travel on the 1000 hrs train departure from Ennis to Dublin. At the moment the 9 am. Service from Kilkee arrives in Ennis at 10.10 hrs and a 10 minute adjustment on this route would facilitate a connection with the Dublin Train Departure. The same is in the case in the evening when the Dublin Train arrives into Ennis at 18.37, 10 minutes after the bus has departed for West Clare.
I received confirmation from Martin Nolan CEO Bus Eireann that they were working with the National Transport Authority and were undertaking public transport reviews here in the County and that they would give consideration to my request as part of their ongoing reviews.
I have been in touch with Bus Eireann again in recent weeks to ascertain the outcome of the reviews and I have again reiterated to the CEO the importance of coordinating the bus and train timetable to facilitate the people of West Clare and I have been assured that a response will issue to my request very shortly.
Integrating our Bus and Rail services will have knock on benefits for both Bus Eireann and Irish Rail as it will encourage greater use of their services. It is also critical in terms of the ongoing promotion of the Wild Atlantic Way, having a well-connected Public Transport System will enhance West Clare as tourist destination by making it easier for Tourists to access the top class tourism product that we have to offer and this is critical in terms of the sustainability of tourism development going forward.
