The Ambassador of the Ukraine to Ireland, Sergii Reva, will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade tomorrow afternoon to consider the on-going crisis in Eastern Ukraine.
Despite a ceasefire agreement between both the Ukraine and Russia that was brokered on 12 February in Belarus, fighting has continued in the region.
Committee Chairman Pat Breen TD says “The Committee has been following the escalation of hostilities in the Ukraine, which began in November 2013, with deep concern. The meeting with Ambassador Reva tomorrow will provide an opportunity to assess the latest situation in Eastern Ukraine, and the extent to which the ceasefire agreed in Minsk last month has eased tensions. While there have been some signs that both Ukraine and the rebels have been withdrawing troops and equipment in recent days, the ceasefire remains fragile and far from comprehensive. The Committee looks forward to exploring with the Ambassador what his government sees are the required steps to mitigate the alarming crisis for the Ukraine and the wider region.”
The meeting commences tomorrow Wednesday 4 March at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 and can be followed live at:
