Statement on the Tragic Events in Kilkee

September 12th, 2016 - Pat Breen

Today we had a stark reminder of the courage, dedication and selflessness or those unique and brave people who make up the crews of our rescue and emergency services.

Each time they are called to duty they risk all to save and assist not just neighbours and friends, but any stranger in distress. The crew member of the Irish Coastguard was one such brave woman, who has paid the ultimate price for her selfless mission to help others.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to her husband, her family, colleagues and friends. The death of this hero has resonated with everyone throughout Clare and we must never forget her sacrifice.

I am relieved to learn that her colleagues on the ill-fated boat which capsized today while the crew were on duty have been rescued, and would like to pay tribute to their fellow rescue service members who risked all to ensure we did not have a second tragedy tonight. I wish all of them a full and speedy recovery.

Today is a dark day not only for volunteers of the rescue services, but all in Clare who appreciate their dedication, bravery and sacrifices.
