Breen and Keating welcome plans to hand over former Doonbeg Garda Station to the local Community

Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and West Clare Fine Gael Councillor Gabriel Keating have welcomed the news that the Minister of State, Brian Hayes T.D., is to hand over the former Garda Station in Doonbeg to the Local Community Group, Doonbeg Community Development Ltd.
Deputy Breen and Cllr Keating have applauded the efforts of the Doonbeg Community Development Ltd for their great community initiative and spirit in developing the former Garda Barracks in the West Clare Village.

Deputy Breen said that “I was delighted to be able to assist the community development group in its plans to transform the former station into a centre that will become the focal point for the local community. And I would like to acknowledge the Local Development Group for the foresight they have shown in putting forward there plans. Clearly, Minister of State Brian Hayes, Minister has recognised the merits of the local Group’s proposal and I would like to thank him and acknowledge his support for this project.”

The Local Community Group’s plans include the incorporation of a tourist office, a new Development Office, coffee shop come craft shop and meeting rooms for local organizations such as Comhra Na Gaeilge, Community Alert, the Local Enterprise Group and a host of other voluntary Groups in the Parish.

Councillor Gabriel Keating said that “Doonbeg Community Group Ltd has a strong track record in community development and the transformation of this Garda Barracks into a new Community Centre is another example of its great can-do attitude and I wish the group well with this project.”

The property will now been assigned to the Doonbeg Community Ltd, for a term of five years, which may be renewable following a review by the Commissioners at the end of the term.

The Chief State Solicitors are currently finalising a draft licence setting out the terms and conditions which will be forwarded to the solicitors acting on behalf of Doonbeg Community Development for their consideration.

Deputy Breen and Cllr Keating said that “this is very good news for the Village of Doonbeg. We are hoping

that this final part of the process can be completed swiftly so that the property can be handed over to the local Community as soon as possible”.
