Breen congratulates Samantha Power on UN appointment

June 7th, 2013 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael Clare TD and Chairman of the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee, Pat Breen, has today (Thursday) offered his congratulations to Dublin-native, Samantha Power, who has been nominated as the next US ambassador to the United Nations.

“I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to Samantha Power on her nomination as the next US Ambassador to the United Nations. The Dublin native has demonstrated her expertise in the area of foreign policy over a number of years, dating back to her time as a foreign correspondent for a number of publications in the 1990s.

“As well as being an accomplished former journalist, Ms Power is also a Harvard professor and Pulitzer winning author. She has achieved a huge amount since she emigrated with her family from Castleknock to Pittsburg in 1979.

“Ms Power is the latest in a number of Irish Americans taking up very high profile roles within the American administration, which is something to both welcome and be proud of. She has developed a reputation as being a strong human rights advocate, and I believe she can have a very positive impact in the UN, by bringing a fresh perspective and a new voice.

“I intend to write to Ms Power to offer my congratulations, and I hope I will get the opportunity to meet her in person if I am fortunate enough to visit the White House again in the years ahead.”
