August 2nd, 2012 - Pat Breen

Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs & Trade has expressed his condolences to the husband and family of Maeve Binchy RIP, on their sad loss.

“It is with deep regret that I heard of the death of Maeve Binchy RIP. She was an extraordinary woman who through her writings and many TV and Radio appearances won the hearts and minds of the Irish People. The popular author of 16 novels her books are treasured by many and adorn the shelves of most homes throughout the Country.”

“Maeve Binchy RIP was a regular visitor to County Clare, having attended the very first Merriman School in Ennis in 1968. I had the pleasure of meeting her in the foyer of the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon a number of years ago during one her many visits to Clare. She was a charming lady, who loved to chat; a real people’s person and she told me how she loved her visits to Clare and the many friends that she had made through the Merriman School, including friends in Ballyvaughan. She would recall our meeting in Ennistymon later on when we met up again at a number of functions in Dublin.”

“She will be sorely missed by all her readers, but her greatest loss will be felt by her husband Gordon and her immediate family, to whom I express my deepest condolences.”
