BREEN SEEKS ADJOURNMENT OF THE DAIL TO DEBATE THE DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION OF WORKS UNDER THE FARM WASTE MANAGEMENT SCHEME

December 18th, 2008 - Pat Breen

On the Order of Business on Wednesday morning Deputy Pat Breen sought the Adjournment of the Dail to debate the Health and Safety Issues arising from the Agriculture Ministers failure to extend the 31st December 2008 deadline for the completion of works under the Farm Waste Management Scheme.

"This morning I sought the adjournment of the Dail to have this matter discussed and Last week I also raised this matter by way of parliamentary question to Minister Smith. On that occasion he said that he has "no plans to approach the European Commission for approval to extend the deadline." This is not good enough. Farmers are under severe pressure; health and safety is a serious issue, in the past two weeks two people have been seriously injured here in County Clare while working erecting slatted sheds."

"This deadline is unreasonable and the Minister for Agriculture and Food must put forward a case at this late stage to extend the deadline due to the continuing inclement bad weather before lives will be lost."
