BREEN WELCOMES AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE IRISH AND BELARUSSIAN GOVERNMENT WHICH WILL SEE CHILDREN CONTINUE TO COME TO COUNTY CLARE.

December 9th, 2008 - Pat Breen
Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare TD, has welcomed today’s (Tuesday) announcement that the Irish and Belarussian Governments have agreed arrangements to enable children from Chernobyl to continue to come to Ireland and in particular to County Clare for holidays every Christmas.

“I am delighted that agreement has been reached. Many children from Belarus have enjoyed the hospitality of the Christmas Season for a number of years from their sponsoring families here in County Clare and the scenes of joy which are witnessed at Shannon Airport when they arrive encapsulates more than anything else the true spirit of Christmas.”

“I hope that the deal, to be signed on 21st December, solves all outstanding problems and that no further barriers present themselves to prevent the Chernobyl children from coming to Ireland and to County Clare. I had repeatedly called for a solution to be found and am glad that at last this has been achieved.”

“I also hope now that we will witness these scenes of joy at Shannon Airport again this year and that children from Belarus can continue to enjoy the festivities here in County Clare.”
