April 24th, 2014 - Pat Breen

Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen has today (Tuesday) welcomed the signing by Clare County Council of the contract with L& M Keating, the successful tenderer for the construction of the new pier in Doolin.

“Today marks an important milestone for the Volunteer Coast Guard Station, for the ferry operators and for the Tourism Industry in Doolin and the wider North Clare Area.

I am delighted that after years of campaigning that the contract for the construction for the development of the Pier at Doolin has now been signed.

The construction of the Pier is another boost for the local volunteer coastguard coming on top of the construction of the new volunteer coast guard station which is underway.

The completion of the Pier will also help in attracting additional tourists in to the area. Every year over 3,000 tourists visit Doolin and when the new Pier is in operation it will provide easier access for the ferry operators thereby bolstering the number of tourists opting to avail of ferry trips to visit the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Island’s which will have spin off benefits for the entire economy of North Clare.

Today’s signing is very positive news for the local community and for all those involved in the Volunteer Coastguard and the tourism related activity in the area and I look forward to seeing the newly constructed Pier when it is completed which I understand is expected be in mid-2015.”
