July 22nd, 2008 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Human Rights Spokesperson Pat Breen TD, has today (Tuesday) welcomed the news of the arrest of former Bosnia Serb Leader Radovan Karadzic.

“Karadzic has been on the run for over 11 years having been indicted twice by the United Nations war crimes tribunal in the Hague. He stands accused of some of the more horrific crimes against humanity including genocide, murder and racial and religious persecutions mainly against Muslims. The UN claims that his forces killed 7,500 Muslim men and boys from Srebrencia in July 1995 alone.

“I congratulate the Serbian Authorities on this arrest and hope that the victims of his reign of terror will now finally get the justice they deserve. A lot of work has been done in bringing those responsible for some of the greatest crimes against humanity during the Bosnian wars to account and I hope that efforts will continue to arrest his alleged partner in these crimes, the former General Ratko Mladic who remains at large.”
