Breen welcomes provision of extra Resource Teacher posts

June 25th, 2013 - Pat Breen

Clare TD and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee has welcomed the decision taken by the Government to appoint an extra 500 resource teachers for children with special needs, saying the move will come as a relief to parents and teachers alike.

“I was very concerned last week by the plans announced by the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn TD, to reduce the number of resource hours available to special needs children to cope with a significant increase in demand.

This move caused a lot of upset for families and my Constituency Office was inundated with calls from concerned constituents. I am pleased that the Government has now listened to these concerns and that it is committed to to filling 500 extra resource teacher posts to cope with the increase in demand for the coming school year. The number of SNAs is also being protected at the same level as last year.

“I understand that a report is being compiled for the Minister for Education to consider what reforms are necessary within the special education sector going forward. And I would hope that lessons will be learned from this and that those children who are most in need of resources will continue to receive the support they need going forward.”
