Breen welcomes signing of Heads of Agreement for Shannon airport

September 23rd, 2011 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael TD for Clare and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pat Breen, has today (Thursday) welcomed the news that the Heads of Agreement has been signed between the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) and the Lynx Cargo Group.

“This will pave the way for the development of Shannon airport as a centre of excellence for cargo. I am delighted that the negotiations which have been taking place over the last number of months between the DAA and the Lynx Group have successfully concluded and that both parties have signed the Heads of Agreement.

“Particular credit must go for today’s announcement to the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar. He has been heavily involved in driving this project forward since taking up office and I know from my discussions with him that he recognises what the potential of a first class cargo logistics hub has for Shannon Airport and the region and that he is anxious to get this project underway.

“A major selling point for us in promoting and encouraging tenants to set up their cargo operations is the having US Cargo pre clearance at the Airport. In a visit to Washington this week, I met with a number of key Congressmen to discuss this possibility, including the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and US congressmen. They were all very supportive of the proposal to extend the pre clearance facility at Shannon to include freight and the signing of the Heads of Agreement has strengthened our case in pursing this.

“Shannon Airport has a history of innovation and has title to many firsts, including the First Irish Coffee, the First Duty Free and the First US Pre Clearance facility outside of the Americas. We now have a real opportunity to create another first by developing a centre of excellence for cargo development at Shannon and today’s development is the first step in realising that goal.”
