Deputy Breen was speaking following his informal meeting on Friday evening last with the new US Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney.

Deputy Breen was the 1st Clare Deputy to meet with the new US Ambassador Rooney when he took up residency at the US Embassy in the Phoenix Park on Friday evening last. Earlier that day he presented his credentials to President Mary McAleese before hosting his formal celebration of America’s Fourth of July holiday.

“I very much welcome the Ambassador’s positive response. He is looking forward to visiting County Clare and he mentioned the special relationship that exists between Shannon Airport and America. He told me that he hoped to come down to Shannon at the end of the month for the opening of the new pre clearance facility and he assured me that Cargo Pre Clearance is on the Agenda, it will be next step.”

“I was delighted to meet with Ambassador Rooney so soon after his arrival in Ireland. We discussed the US Customs and Border Protection Facility at Shannon Airport as I was very anxious to impress on the Ambassador the need now to extend the facility at Shannon to include Cargo Preclearance.”

“I welcome this commitment from Ambassador Rooney. Cargo Pre Clearance will be hugely significant for Shannon Airport. We need to invest in Cargo facilities at Shannon so that we are in a position to provide a world class logistics facility and attract new industries to the Region.”
