Catastrophic blow to the Region – Breen.

June 11th, 2009 - Pat Breen

Commenting on the news that Delta Airlines are ready to pull their Daily Direct New York Service from Shannon Airport as and from 4th October 2009 next, Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen said that it will be “a catastrophic blow for this Region at a time when speculation is also rife that Aer Lingus are to cut transatlantic services from Shannon this winter

“Speculation has been rife from some time now that Delta was considering this move and any loss of a US carrier from Shannon is a major blow particularly given the speculation that Aer Lingus are also set to reduce their Transatlantic Services from Shannon this winter. Shannon Airport is now facing huge challenges. Further reductions in Shannon Airports Transatlantic Business will be a huge body blow to the Business and Tourism Sectors in the Region who are already struggling to survive.”

“The Government must now act immediately to make sure that we retain an all year round daily direct service to the US from Shannon and they must also abolish the €10 Air Travel Tax the introduction of which is nonsensical at a time when the entire aviation industry is in free fall.”
