Check your Passport and Apply Early – BREEN

June 25th, 2015 - Pat Breen

Check your Passport and Apply Early that is the message from Clare Deputy and Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs, Pat Breen T.D. for people who intend travelling abroad this summer

“I would appeal to anyone from Clare who intends travelling abroad this summer to check their passport to make sure it is valid. Given that we are now in the midst of the summer period, I have been dealing with an increased number of cases for constituents whose passports have run out of date close to their departure. It is very often the last thing that people check before travelling so I am urging everyone who intends travelling to check their passports now.

Last year, the passport office dealt with 629,446 passports. We are now in height of the summer season and between 5th May 2015 and the 4th June 2015, the service dealt with 100,000 applications with the highest number for one day received on the 3rd June 2015, some 7,500 applications.

The quickest way of getting a new passport is through the Passport Express Service through the Post Office. Applications through this service are currently being processed within 10/11 working days with First time and Lost/Stolen applications processed in 11/12 working days. However, during peak periods this processing time can increase due to the increased volume of applications. If you are worried about the processing time you can check the status of your application, which is updated regularly on the online Tracking System available on

In the case of an emergency situation (the death of serious illness of a family member or a medical emergency, you can have your passport processed in one day. In addition there is the Pilot Rapid Renewal service whereby it is possible by appointment to renew a passport for an Adult or Child travelling in less than 3 working days. A First Adult or Child applicant cannot avail of this service. An appointment can be made at

“Even if people have not yet booked a holiday, it is important that they check their passport as soon as possible. A Six Month Passport Validity Rule applies to persons entering the United States on non-immigrant visas and this rule also applies to a number of other Countries so it is important that your passport is valid. It is possible to get a passport without too much difficulty but is important to allow time for it to be processed.
