Clare reeling from job losses as 57 more go at Avocent

June 30th, 2008 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael Clare Deputy Pat Breen has expressed his sympathies to the 57 workers at Shannon-based IT company Avocent International who were told today (Monday) that they are to be laid off.

“The announcement by Avocent that it is to cut jobs at its plant in Shannon comes as a massive blow to the entire area.

“This highlights the absolute shambles the Government has made of the economy with job losses resulting from Fianna Fáil’s sloppy handling of the economy. The cost of business is sky-rocketing with a complete lack of infrastructure in the Mid-West. In fact, just last summer Avocent warned that the cutting of the Shannon-Heathrow route would badly impact the firm.

“Instead of trying to disguise ‘cutbacks’ as ‘savings’, the Fianna Fáil Government would be better advised to properly engage in regional development.
