Collapse of WTO talks good news for Clare Farmers – BREEN.

July 29th, 2008 - Pat Breen
Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has today welcomed the collapse of the WTO talks saying that “it is good news for Clare farmers.”

“No deal is better than a bad deal for Clare farmers. However, serious questions remain about this Governments handling of the negotiations. During the Lisbon referendum campaign the Taoiseach promised to use the Irish veto at the talks. This situation became very unclear however post Lisbon when it appeared the Government had no appetite for the fight for Irish Farmers. Were it not for the strong stance taken by the French President Nicolas Sarkozy the interests of Irish farmers would have been ignored. “

“Where we go from here is uncertain. It remains to be seen whether Doha will be torn up completely or if after a period of reflection efforts will be renewed to salvage a new deal. In any event nothing is likely to happen until after the November Presidential elections in the US. In the meantime, the Irish Government must keep their eye on the ball and ensure that Irish farmers interests are protected.”
