€20,000 allocated for Kilrush Playground Upgrade – BREEN

December 2nd, 2013 - Pat Breen

Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen has welcomed the news that €20,000 in funding has been allocated under the Play and Recreation initiative Scheme 2013 from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs for the upgrade of the playground at Cappa in Kilrush.

Kilrush is the only Clare project to benefit and is among a group of 15 projects nationwide to secure funding under the Play and recreation initiative for which €250,000 was allocated in 2013.

“I was very pleased to be informed by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald today (Monday) that €20,000 has been allocated to Kilrush to upgrade the Playground at Cappa.

Cllr Ian Lynch, Kilrush Town Council was supporting the project and was in touch with me to request that I make representations to the Minister Fitzgerald in relation to same.

The proposed works include installing new equipment for children (18 months to 16 years), installing new soft surfaces, security fencing and motion detection security lighting, upgrading existing play equipment and constructing new access ramp from the road.

Given the size and population of Kilrush it is important there is a modern playground in place which meets the needs of the Community there. The refurbishment of this playground at Cappa and the installation of the new equipment will greatly enhance the recreational activities available for young children and families in Kilrush ensuring that they can enjoy these activities in a safer and more enjoyable environment.

The provision of playgrounds encourages participation in healthy activities and I have no doubt but that the upgrade of the Cappa facility will provide hours of fun and enjoyment for the children and families of Kilrush and it is a very welcome development.”
