Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has today (Tuesday) urged the HSE to fill the Dental Hygienist position which is now vacant at the Health Centre in Shannon.

“I received a number of representations from constituents living in Shannon recently who had appointments made to visit the Dental Hygienist and whose appointments were cancelled at short notice. Over three weeks have now elapsed and none of those appointments have been rescheduled.”

“When I made enquiries into this matter I discovered that the Dental Hygienist had gone on Maternity Leave and as of today, her position has not been replaced. Everyday the importance of dental hygiene in the prevention of dental decay is being highlighted and this is especially important in the case of young children who are developing day by day and cannot afford to wait months to see a hygienist.”

“Quite clearly the embargo on recruitment is having an affect on the delivery of essential frontline services and it is not good enough for the HSE to wait until the person was gone on Maternity Leave before putting alternative cover in place. My understanding today is that some level of cover will be put in place at the Shannon Health Clinic, however, I hope that it will be sufficient to cope with the demand which there quite clearly is for the service and I would urge the HSE to get the service back up and running as soon as possible.”
