Foreign Affairs Committee welcomes Gaza ceasefire progress

July 17th, 2014 - Pat Breen

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade has this afternoon welcomedagreement on a comprehensive ceasefire brokered in Cairo earlier today and expressed the hope that leaders on both sides will approve the deal.

The Committee also expressed its sympathy to the innocent victims and their loved ones killed or injured during the ten days of fighting.

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “This Committee has a longstanding interest in Israel-Palestine relations and was disappointed by the recent outbreak of bloodshed in the region and the high number of civilian casualties. On behalf of the Joint Committee, I wish to welcome the progress towards a comprehensive ceasefire brokered this morning. Recognising the progress in getting to this stage, the Committee is urging leaders on both sides to endorse the deal.

“Along with other Committee Members, I have kept in constant communication with both the Israeli and the Palestinian Ambassadors in Dublin. Members have been keen to stress that both sides need to end their use

of violence immediately in order to spare ordinary citizens on all sides the terrible consequences of war. We also ask that the progress made this morning provides an impetus for dialogue aimed at securing a lasting peace between Israel and Hamas.”
