Gort to TuamN17/N18 PPP gets Green Light – Breen

July 26th, 2012 - Pat Breen

Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen has today (Tuesday) welcomed the news that the N17/N18 PPP Gort To Tuam Bypass has been given the green light and has been included in the Governments €2 billion euros infrastructure investment programme.

“The N17/N18 PPP consists of 57 kilometres of motorway providing bypasses of Clarinbridge, Claregalway and Tuam. This scheme will significantly improve safety and reduce journey times and will improve connectivity within the western region. It is particularly good news for the development of Shannon Airport given that it will provide easier access to the Airport for people travelling from the North West.”

“It will also help to boost the construction Industry given that I expect that a number of construction workers from Clare and small contractors should secure employment during the construction phase given the scale of this project. Having a first class road, rail and Airport Rail infrastructure is critical in attracting new Foreign Direct Projects to this Region and today’s news will bolster the efforts to encourage investors to cite their projects in the West of Ireland.”

“The ECB has provided loan approval in principle of €170 million euro and there is a preferred tender in place and I would hope now that following today’s announcement that the project can progressed as a priority and if this happens I believe that there is the potential for the project to start construction in the first quarter of 2013.”
