Housing Aid for the Elderly – Minister agrees to meeting

July 2nd, 2008 - Pat Breen

Deputy Breen has received the following reply to his request for a meeting with Minister Gormley to discuss the shortage of funding for the Housing Adaptation grant for the elderly and people with disabilities here in County Clare. While the Minister appears to suggest that Clare County Council must manage this scheme with the funding already allocated to it, Deputy Breen will be pressing the Minister to review this decision when the Meeting takes place shortly.

This Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 9th July 2008 at 5.00 clock in Dublin.

“The funding allocated by the Minister to Clare County Council was wholly inadequate. The scheme has now being terminated by Clare County Council mid-way through the year, this decision is hitting the most vulnerable in our County, the elderly and it simply must be reviewed.

REPLY

Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government (Mr. M. Finneran):

The administration of the Housing Adaptation Grant Schemes for Older People and People with a Disability is a matter for individual local authorities. My Department made a combined capital allocation to all local authorities on 21 May for the operation of the Schemes in private houses in 2008. It is a matter for each local authority to decide on the level of funding to be provided for each of the Schemes, from within the combined allocation notified to them by my Department and to manage the operation of the schemes from within this allocation.   I have already received separate representations requesting a meeting with Clare County Council in relation to these grant schemes and this will take place shortly.
