Kilkee Storm Repair Works to commence – BREEN.

February 10th, 2015 - Pat Breen

Welcoming the news that the Storm Repair Works are to commence in Kilkee on Monday, next, 16th February 2014, Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen has expressed his hope that these works will be completed as soon as possible.

“Clare County Council has engaged BAM Construction to undertake the storm repair works in Kilkee and I understand that this work is get underway next Monday, 16th February 2014.

Kilkee was very badly affected by the storms last years and in particular the February storm wreaked havoc on the seafront. The 19th century historic wall was very badly damaged and there was significant subsidence along the Strand line with the resultant road closure and loss of passing traffic having a negative impact for the local businesses and residents in the town especially during the height of the season.

I understand that these works will involve substantial remediation/reconstruction work to the sea wall and the associated road behind it. I also understand that it will involve the construction of low level deck platforms on the beach side of the wall whose weight is intended to counteract any inclination there might be for the type of ground movements which caused the problem to be rectified.

€1.3 million is being expended on the project with the works due to be completed by the end of May.

Given the importance of Tourism for the Town of Kilkee and the on-going promotion of the Wild Atlantic Way along the Loop Head Peninsula, I would hope that this work be completed as soon as possible so that it does not have a negative impact on Kilkee and the wider area for the coming tourist season.”
