Loop Head Tourism Award – an achievement which must be built upon – BREEN.

June 25th, 2010 - Pat Breen

Congratulating Loop Head on being awarded the title of European Destination of Excellence – Aquatic Tourism by Failte Ireland, Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare. T.D. Pat Breen said today (Monday) that this achievement must now be built upon and that there are many opportunities to develop tourism throughout the West Clare Peninsula.

“Firstly, I would like to extend my congratulations to the Loop Head Tourism Group and in particular to Cillian Murphy, John Redmond, John Williams and Tom Byrne for all their hard work which has culminated in this success.”

“The re-emergence of Loop Head as a Tourist destination will have spin off affects for the entire West Clare Area. For too long the undiscovered beauty and potential which the area has to offer went unnoticed. Now thanks to the renewed efforts of the Loop Tourism Group the area has been put back on the map.”

“The case for Loop Head has also been helped by the efforts of Local Councillor Gabriel Keating who has promoted the idea of setting up of a visitor centre at the West Clare facility similar to the one which operates at the Hood Head Lighthouse in Wexford and where discussions are now ongoing between Clare County Council, Shannon Development and all relevant stakeholders as to how this project can be progressed.”

“The Loop Peninsula has a lot to offer such as dolphin and whale watching, sailing, diving and sea and cliff angling. Indeed, throughout County Clare we have numerous top visitor attractions and an International Airport on our doorstep. Emigration has created a Clare Diaspora which it is estimated has resulted in millions of people world-wide who claim ancestry back to County Clare and which we must tap into”

“Spearheading the drive to establish Loop Head as a top tourist destination will help to ensure that when we emerge out of recession that Loop Head will be in a position to complete with places like Dingle. For Loop Head to be in that position a number of issues require attention:

Signposting must be improved – Tourist who come off the ferry in Killimer or who drive along the West Clare roads must be aware of what the area has to offer.

Tourist who visit Clare must be encouraged to stay longer in the county and all tourism agencies must work together to achieve this.
A special marketing fund is required with the sole focus of marketing the Shannon Catchment area.

“County Clare has an abundance of top class tourist attractions; however, without adequate marketing this country will not reach its full potential.”
