Marketing Drive now essential to support services – BREEN

May 31st, 2010 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Spokesman and Clare TD Pat Breen has today (Monday) welcomed Aer Arann’s decision to launch four UK routes from Shannon to Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol and Birmingham from 1st July.

“This is a hugely welcome boost for Shannon Airport and the region. The Government should immediately deliver on the much-promised €53 million marketing fund for Shannon Airport to support these services.

“Aer Arann’s new UK routes to Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham are a very welcome boost for Shannon. The new franchise agreement between Aer Arann and Aer Lingus which has led to the development of ‘Aer Lingus Regional’ has made today’s announcement possible. This is the way forward for the air transport industry and the future of many airlines will depend on companies being willing to form alliances or mergers in order to drive down overall costs.

“The fact that Aer Arann operates with ATR 72-500 aircraft which are 70% more fuel efficient than a conventional 737 will also help the airline to keep costs down.

“I hope this is just the start of the fight-back for Shannon Airport. Now that Aer Lingus Regional is committed to developing short-haul services out of Shannon, its parent company Aer Lingus will also commit to deliver year-round transatlantic services to Shannon.

“I also hope other airlines will be encouraged to operate out of Shannon in light of this vote of confidence by Aer Lingus Regional.”
