Naming the tunnel after the late Brendan O’ Regan (RIP) would be a fitting tribute to a man who was one of this Region’s Greatest Aviation and Industry Visionaries – BREEN

September 3rd, 2009 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has today called for the Tunnel linking the N18 at Cratloe with the Limerick South Ring Road Project to be named after the Mid-West Region’s greatest visionary the late Brendan O’Regan RIP.

“The Limerick Tunnel consists of 9.75km of two lane dual carriageways, 2.3km of single lane dual carriageway, 675m long tunnel under the River Shannon, 750 causeway across Bunlick lake, 11 Bridges, 6 Underpasses and 8 Culverts and 2 Toll Plazas. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken in the Mid-West Region, it is estimated that it will cost over 500 Million euros and when open will be capable of handling 40,000 vehicles a day. Now that work is well underway on the new Roundabouts at Cratloemoyle (at the SAS Radisson Hotel) and the Meelick Roundabout (at the Two Mile Inn) to complete the N18 Interchange, I believe that we should now be turning our attention to renaming the Tunnel.”

“The Tunnel will connect the entire Mid-West Region and improve access to Shannon Airport, Galway, Dublin and Cork and of course one of the main Toll Plaza’s is located on the Clare Side.”

“I believe that naming the tunnel after the late Brendan O’ Regan (RIP) would be a fitting tribute to a man who was one of this Region’s Greatest Aviation and Industry Visionaries. Dr. O’Regan’s lifelong commitment to the Mid-West Region is second to none; the development of the world’s first duty free shop; his vision for Shannon Airport and the importance of regional development; the birth of Shannon Development and the Industrial Zone, the Shannon College of Hotel Management, the development of Bunratty and in later years the establishment of the Irish Peace Institute. These are testament to a man of vision and enterprising initiative.”

“I also believe that the fact that the Tunnel is a cross between Clare and Limerick that by naming it after the late Brendan O’Regan RIP ; we could put aside our historic boundary clashes to recognise and acknowledge the contribution of the Mid-West’s greatest Aviation and Industrial Pioneers. A man who put this Region on the map.”
