February 17th, 2009 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has today paid a warm tribute to his close friend and political colleague former Senator and Member of Clare County Council Michael Howard following his death this morning.

“Although Michael had been ill for the past couple of months it is with a great sense of personal sadness that I learnt of his passing this morning.”

“Former Senator and Member of Clare County Council Michael was a man whom I had great respect for. His death is a tremendous loss not alone for his family but indeed for the entire people of Clare to whom he gave such huge public service over several decades.”

“Michael was one of life’s gentlemen and he was a tremendous organiser and strategist. It was these qualities that endeared him to the various farming, business and political organisations he served during his life.”

“Michael loved his family, his County and his Country. He was a member of Clare County Council from 1974 to 1991 and served in Seanad Eireann from 1977 to 1997. In the intervening period he stood for the Fine Gael in the General Election Campaigns of 1969, 1973 and 1981.”

I extend my deepest sympathy to his immediate family Tom, Michael, Mary, Seamus, Elizabeth, Gearoid, Louise and Brid, relatives and friends.

“Michael will be sorely missed “.
