Post election Sports Capital Allocation Grants reduced significantly – BREEN

July 30th, 2008 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen claims that the post election Sports Capital Allocation Grants have been reduced significantly with Clare losing out in 2008 to the tune of €598,000.

“Sports grants funding has been cut from €80m to €50 this year and here in County Clare grants have dropped from €2,160,000 in 2007 to €1,562,000 in 2008 with the number of Clubs benefiting dropping from 32 in 2007 to 24 in 2008.”

“It is obvious that the sports grants allocation scheme was used as a pre election slush fund by the Government, last years grant allocations scheme was annouced in April well ahead of the general election.”

“It is interesting to note however that while Clare has seen a significant reduction in sports funding for this year the Governments Independent ally Tipperary North’s Michael Lowry T.D. has secured major funding for projects in his own constitutency.”.

“While the sports capital allocation grants scheme receives half of its funding from the National Lottery it appears that the sports clubs of County Clare are the latest big losers of Government cutbacks.”
