Pre Clearance Legislation is now urgent – BREEN.

April 30th, 2009 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen said that introduction of the Pre Clearance Legislation which will allow Shannon Airport to have the facility up and running at the Airport from 1st July is now urgent following the DAA’s announcement this week that job losses could be on cards at Shannon, Cork and Dublin Airport’s.

“Minister Dempsey must ensure that this legislation which is currently been drafted comes before the House in the next few weeks. Any further delays will jeopardise the Airport’s ability to have this facility up and running from the 1st July next.”

“This week’s announcement by the DAA that further job losses could be on the cards at Shannon Airport is a worrying development. However, I do not believe that there is room for more cost savings from Staff. Shannon Staff have already made huge sacrifices. Following the reduction in their staffing numbers by 200, those remaining have contributed significantly to a major restructuring programme.”

“I would have to question however if all the monies from the sale of assets including the Great Southern Hotel Group have gone back into the Dublin coffers and why some of these monies were not used to reduce the Airport’s €70m debt which it is now being saddled with.”

“The North American Tourism Industry remains crucially important to the economy of this Country particularly here in the West of Ireland and while the entire Industry is battling the affects of a global crisis the provision of this US Customs and Border Protection facility at Shannon Airport will be another first for the Shannon.”

Shannon Airport can continue to lead the way and be very innovative even in these difficult times given the proper support by Government.”

“I am urging Minister Dempsey to have this legislation debated in the Dail as soon as possible and ensure that no further obstacles are put in the way of having this facility up and running from the 1st July.”

Answered by the Minister for Transport

Noel Dempsey, T.D.

Drafting of the necessary legislation for pre clearance is at an advanced stage and I intend to introduce the legislation to the Houses of the Oireachtas in the coming weeks to enable Shannon Airport to be in a position to commence pre clearance in the summer period.
