Repair works on Kilkee Wastewater Pumping Station must not be delayed – Minister Pat Breen.

March 9th, 2017 - Pat Breen

Minister for Employment and Small Business Pat Breen is disappointed to learn that repair works on the Kilkee Wastewater Pumping Station will not be completed until Mid May.

“While I appreciate that Irish Water has been working on the issue since December and there is no quick solution, it is essential that there are no delays in the repairs process and that it is completed in the time line committed to,” said Minister Breen.

“The protection and safeguarding of the quality of the beach in Kilkee is of course crucial for the health and safety of users, but a fully accessible beach is also necessary for the local economy. The beach is central to the tourism industry in this seaside town and it cannot be allowed to go unused throughout the summer,” he added.

“I have been in constant communications with Irish Water on this matter since last December, when an emergency discharge occurred due to a failure in an operational safety device at the pumping station during heavy rainfall.

“I appreciate that a lot of work has been carried out to date to rectify the situation, but time continues to be of the essence,” said Minister Breen.

“While a mid-May completion date for these works should have the beach fully functional for the “peak summer season”, I am also mindful that the tourism season in Kilkee begins for many on St Patrick’s Day. Easter and the month of April can also be very busy as we can often have the best of our weather during this month,” said the Clare TD and minister of state.

“I have therefore pressed upon Irish Water once again that the repair of the pumping station in Kilkee must remain a priority so that people can return to the water.”

Note to Editor:

A ‘Do Not Swim’ notice issued by Clare County Council in December remains in place pending completion of the work at the pumping station.

Irish Water has appointed contractors to carry out repair and upgrade works to the Kilkee wastewater pumping station, with all works on site due to be completed within the next two months.

Irish Water has also commissioned the manufacture and installation of a new surge protection system to replace the one which failed in December. A specialist electrical contractor has been appointed to review all electrical issues at the pumping station and a number of other measures are also being put in place to allow for improved management at times where a large volume of storm water is entering the system.
