Sixmilebridge National School Project to progress – BREEN

April 15th, 2013 - Pat Breen

p1040437Clare T.D. and Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pat Breen has welcomed the news that the building project for Sixmilebridge National School is progressing to the next phase; architectural planning.

Commenting on the news; Deputy Breen said that “There is a clear need to address the accommodation needs at Sixmilebridge National School to cater for the demographic growth in the School given that Sixmilebridge is an area of expansive growth.

Sixmilebridge is one of the fastest growing Towns in the County with the development of 22 new Estates swelling the Town’s population by 51.1% since 2006 (CSO figures).
The project enrolments at the School reflect this increase in population. There are currently 421 pupils enrolled and a surge of enrolments over the next few years will see the schools population grow to 551 pupils by 2015.

The existing School was built in 1934 and was extended in 1985; however, ten prefabs are currently in use there with two of these prefabs at the School since 1976.

Last year, the Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn T.D., visited the School when he had the opportunity to see for himself the accommodation needs of the School.

I am aware from my regular liaising with the School that they have a very active Principal Gareth Heagney, Board of Management and Local Parish Priest and I would like to take this opportunity to commend them for their on-going efforts which has culminated in this decision.

The Brief for the project is now being finalised by the Department and the project is progressing architectural planning. The Brief is being finalised and the Department will be in touch with the School shortly regarding same. The Department is also in contact with the School and will be addressing its interim accommodation needs.

After many years of uncertainty regarding this project, today’s news brings certainty for the School and the local community going forward. And I look forward to continuing to work with the Principal, Board of Management and the wider community in successfully moving this project forward.”
