Spending on Prefabs – County Clare in the Top Ten – BREEN.

March 12th, 2010 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen saidtoday in response to figures revealed by his colleague Fine Gael’s Education Spokesperson, Brian Hayes T.D. which reveals that County Clare is in the top ten when it comes to the number of prefabs in use in the Primary School Education System in Ireland.

A survey undertaken by Fine Gael Education Spokesman, Brian Hayes TD has revealed a county by county breakdown in the total number of prefabs in use in primary school education.

“Over €100 million is being spend on providing prefabs in just three years and a breakdown of the information relating to the number of prefabs and the number of pupils in each county, reveals the number of “pupils per prefab”. In County Clare’s case there are 70 prefabs in use with on average 189.3 pupils per prefab.”

“Many of our Schools are renting prefabs for years and the reality is our children have to battle inclement weather every day accessing our education system. Indeed, many of children will spend their entire primary education being taught in prefabs, while at the same time, Schools throughout this County are waiting years for the green light to ahead with their School Building Projects and in the meantime teachers are expected to deliver first class education in second class conditions. This Government missed an opportunity during the height of the ‘celtic tiger’ to reduce our spending on prefabs and build permanent school buildings. Even at this stage, the focus should be shifted to the construction of permanent buildings and this would give a much needed boost to construction workers who have lost their jobs.

“Some schools have been renting prefab for many years, sometimes ten years or more leaving some children spending the majority of their school lives stuck in temporary accommodation. Unfortunately, in recent years the Government has missed opportunities to both reduce the spend on prefabs and radically increase the school building programme.”
