Taoiseach and Tanaiste must clarify future of Dell jobs before jetting off to Japan – BREEN.

January 7th, 2009 - Pat Breen
Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen warned today (Monday) that the Taoiseach and Tanaiste must clarify the future of jobs at the Dell Facility in Limerick before jetting off to Japan on a Trade Mission next week. Deputy Breen is also calling on both the Taoiseach and the Tanaiste when in Japan to highlight the commercial and economic benefits to the various Companies in Japan of setting up here in the Mid-West Region particularly in County Clare.

“Before jetting off to the Far East on a Trade Mission, the Taoiseach and the Tanaiste must clarify the future of the Dell Facility in Limerick. There is huge trepidation in the Region for the future of at least 2000 workers not to mention the thousands of jobs at risk in auxiliary Companies which are providing services to the Limerick Plant.”

“There is no still no news on the eleventh hour pre-Christmas dash by the Tanaiste and Defence Ministers to Texas. Meanwhile the workers and their families are been kept in the dark. The entire Mid-West Region is holding its breath. This situation cannot continue and these rumours and innuendo about the future of the jobs at the Limerick facility must be clarified by the Taoiseach and the Taoiseach before they jet out to the Far East on Monday, 12th Jan next.”

“While in Japan for a week-long Trade Mission the Taoiseach and Tanaiste must avail of the opportunity to highlight the commercial and economic benefits to the various Japanese Companies of setting up here in the Mid-West Region.”

“While several Multinationals have been attracted to the Mid-West Region over the years, expansion into the Far East offers many opportunities. 2% of Companies already based in the Shannon Free Zone are Japanese however there is huge potential for growth in Japan.”

“Now that connectivity to Heathrow is to be restored we are ideally located here in the Mid-West Region offering global access to the World from Shannon Airport and in June we will have full pre clearance facilities at Shannon allowing airlines when cleared to fly direct to domestic Airports in the US. We also have a well-educated and available work force and an attractive Corporation Tax Structure.”

“Following the success of the Munster Rugby Team who are sponsored by a Japanese Company now is the time for the Taoiseach and Tanaiste to show case the benefits to Japanese Companies of setting up here in the heart of Munster.”

“This Government claims that they are committed to balanced regional development; the best way for them to back up these claims is by encouraging more Japanese Companies to set up here in County Clare.”
