The real remedy for this economy is to get people back to work – BREEN

May 5th, 2009 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. said (today) that as anticipated the upward spiral in the number of people unemployed continues and that the real remedy for this economy is to get people back to work.

Deputy Breen was commenting following the release of the CSO Live Register Figures for County Clare which show a 2.7% in the number signing on in Clare over the past month.   There are now 9618 people registered as unemployed in County Clare with the biggest increase recorded again in the Local Office of Tulla where there are now 1347 unemployed an increase of 6.6% over the past month.  Over the past 12 months unemployed has grown by 96.7% in this County.

“Communities right across this county have been devastated by the affects of rising unemployment and the latest attempt by this Government to plug this hole has failed once again.  Nationally another 20,000 people have signed on the Live Register in March, bringing the seasonally adjusted total to 372,900.  This is the biggest Live Register total on record since records began in 1965.”

“Fine Gael has a plan to rebuild this Country which will create 100,000 jobs within 4 years through a radical new way of investing in key infrastructures including a smart electricity grid and 21 century broadband.”
“Protecting and creating jobs in this Region must be the Governments top priority, in this regard they must
·    Support the work of the Mid-West Task Force by providing the necessary resources.
·    Reduce the cost of VAT and end the regulation red tape which is crippling businesses.
·    Fast track the legislation to ensure that US Pre Immigration Facilities are up and running at Shannon Airport from the 1st July 2009.
·    Tackle the Banking Crisis to free up access to finance for businesses.

The real remedy for this economy is to get people back to work but once again this Government is failing and the recent Budget was another missed opportunity.”
