June 30th, 2009 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen responding the news that the future of the Bus Eireann route from Miltown Malbay to Ennis is under threat said that “more and more of our rural communities are being isolated because they are geographically disadvantaged”. He said that “it is time to review our entire Rural Development Initiatives to take account of this changing economic environment with particular emphasis of sustaining rural communities.

“I have written to Bus Eireann today seeking clarification on whether or not the Miltown Malbay to Ennis route is to be axed and putting the case for the people of Miltown Malbay.”

“This latest threat to another rural bus service in this County highlights the need for a review of our entire Rural Development Initiatives. Our focus must be on the need to preserve our rural communities. The reality is that this has more to do with whether or not the Miltown Malbay to Ennis route is profitable. Cognisance must be taken of the social dimension. Rural communities particularly our elderly people more and more and they are being left isolated because of their geographical disadvantage.”

“We are losing our bus services and there is a threat hanging over many of our post offices and Garda Stations.”

“It is time for an entire root and branch review of our Rural Development Initiatives. If rural communities are to be sustained then it is vitally important that basic essential services are not removed”.
