Two Clare Schools among list of 95 Schools nationally renting Prefabs for over 10 years – BREEN.

January 15th, 2010 - Pat Breen

Figures revealed today by my colleague Fine Gael’s Frontbench Spokesperson on Education and Science, Brian Hayes T.D. show that 95 schools nationally are renting prefabs for more than 10 years at a cost of €1,174,785.05 for 2009 alone.

Two Clare Schools feature among the list of Schools, namely, Barefield N.S. and CBS Bunscoil in Ennis. In the case of Barefield N.S. the cost of renting prefabs last year was €15,000 while at CBS Bunscoil in Ennis the cost was €13,246.65.

Reacting to the news, Clare Fine Gael Deputy Pat Breen T.D. said that “effectively over the past ten years, the Department of Education and Science has spent €282,466 renting prefabs for both schools. When I questioned the spend on renting prefabs earlier this year, figures revealed that around €885,590 annually was being spent by the Dept. renting prefabs in all Clare Schools.”

“At the same time that the Department of Education and Science is spending money on renting prefabs, many of our Schools are crying out for their School Building Projects to be given the green light. Thankfully, after many years of campaigning, Barefield N.S. moved to tender and construction stage last year, but sadly, CBS Bunscoil in Ennis continues to sit and wait. CBS Bunscoil in Ennis, which was built in 1830 and now accommodates 570 students urgently requires new facilities, the current conditions which the Teachers and Staff have to teach the children in, are not suitable and totally unacceptable in 2010.”

“Spending money on renting prefabs, is a total waste of taxpayer’s money, and temporary accommodation should be exactly that, a temporary arrangement. It is clear from the latest revelations, however, that this Governments School Building Programme is in a shambles. The Minister is quite happy to spend money on renting prefabs, while at the same time, he cannot spend the money he has been given for the School Building Programme.”
