YES Vote a Victory for Democracy – BREEN

October 5th, 2009 - Pat Breen

Fine Gael’s Deputy Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Clare T.D. Pat Breen has welcomed the ringing endorsement of the Lisbon Treaty once again by the people of County Clare.

Deputy Breen said that today’s result is a “A Victory for Democracy”.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of County Clare for this ringing endorsement once again of the Treaty and for putting the Country ahead of their anger at this Governments mismanagement of our Economy, ensuring that Ireland remains at the Heart of Europe. For our part, Fine Gael played our part in today’s result having campaigned actively over the past number of weeks. We distributed over 1.1m piece of literature, held 40 meetings, (one of which was held here in Ennis), put up 25,000 posters and our Party Leader Enda Kenny travelled over 6,000 kilometres all over the country promoting the Treaty.”

“Here in County Clare, my colleague Deputy Joe Carey and I campaigned rigorously. During the course of this campaign I found that the mood was very different on this occasion, and that the electorate had a far better understanding of the Treaty.”

“Now that the Lisbon Treaty has been passed and while Fine Gael set outside our political differences with the Government for the sake of the Country, it is now back to business and we will be pursing this Government rigorously over the coming months.”
